Contains: Garoutte's correspondence; typescripts and publications that she wrote about quilts; research materials which contain information on a wide variety of quilt related topics and the history of textiles and textile trade; various fabric swatches collected throughout her life; and photographs documenting quilts and quilters. The Garoutte papers were formerly maintained by the American Quilt Study Group. Many of the research topics in the Garoutte papers may also appear in the AQSG records.

Garoutte was born in 1925. In 1970, she and Joyce Gross began studying the history of quilts and quilt making. They formed the Mill Valley Quilt Authority and built a network of individuals that now comprises the American Quilt Studies Group. In 1979, Garoutte and Gross proposed a gathering of quilt scholars, collectors, among others, to discuss quilt history, biographies of quilt makers, documenting quilts, and the promotion of quilts as an art form.
